Jupiter Analyst Points to Pre-Roll Done Right

In a post on his blog yesterday, Jupiter analyst Nate Elliott points us towards a site that is doing pre-roll right.

First let me say that I’m a long time fan of Nate’s and his POV on both the online advertising and digital home markets. He gets it. Second, lets point you towards Rochester’s WHAM channel 13, who Nate believes is doing pre-roll better than most.

The site keeps the ads short (all are under 15 seconds), they rotate through advertisers so users don’t see the same ad several times in a row,…

Metered Bandwidth Will Cost Everyone More

It was only a matter of time. As more users access bandwidth heavy applications Time Warner is looking into changing its pricing structure to adapt. According to Time Warner: “around 5 percent of the customer base, can account for up to 50 percent of network capacity,” a figure that should come as no surprise.

While metered bandwidth is potentially a good thing, it opens the door for ISPs to up costs for heavy users while keeping rates unnaturally high for users with comparatively low levels of use. On the one hand, when…

Rumor Mill: Revver All Revved Out

OVW is hearing a few things in the rumor mill worth sharing. Revver, the video sharing site that pays out for uploading videos, is running out of steam and may not make it through the end of the month.

Again, to reiterate, this is the rumor mill, and we know how these things go. But OVW has heard the same story from two separate sources, both affiliated with the company.

The second half of the Revver rumor is that Live Universe is interested in stepping in and saving them from their…

Goggleburn Adds Little

Goggleburn, the new online video show hosted by Valleywag’s Nick Douglas is the internet version of the online video show TV has tried numerous times. It fails as badly as anything mainstream media has attempted.

Online shows about content don’t work unless you add some value (sex appeal, humor, wit, criticism…something) otherwise it’s just long tail content highlighting long tail content. The pilot offers few of these things. While Douglas has shown occasional wit on Valleywag, Goggleburn will need to improve significantly if it is to build a returning audience.

Far from showcasing…

Time Mag Looks at China

While we, in the US, bask in the glory of all things online video (Ok, some, most, are not that glorious), Time Magazine’s website (and possibly the print edition, but thats so arcane) takes a look at how China is handling the growth of online video, and their version of YouTube - Tudou.com.

With an audience estimated at 78 million people, online video is big business in China: Western venture capitalists have poured $120 million into the industry since 2004, according to CCID Consulting, a leading Chinese IT firm. Tudou.com, China’s largest…

AppleTV Take II; So Long, Blockbuster

You have to hand it to Apple, they usually get things right on the first try, and when they don’t they fix it pretty quickly. That appears to be the case with AppleTV as “take two” makes it a whole lot simpler to download and watch high quality long-form content on the TV. To sweeten the deal Apple dropped the price on the 40GB model to $229.

At Macworld today, CEO Steve Jobs said that “Apple TV was designed to be an accessory for iTunes and your computer” but they quickly learned…

Tremor Media Raises $11million

Tremor Media announced that it has closed a Series B round of funding of $11 million. This financing raises the total investment in the company to $19.4 million, including the previous round of $8.4 million that closed in September of 2006.

“Tremor has not only proven its vision for the online video advertising market, but has excelled in executing on that vision,” said Warren Lee, principal at Canaan Partners. “With the video…

International Conflict Firsthand

Last week there was a widely publicized incident between U.S. warships and Iranian patrol boats in the Strait of Hormuz. Both the U.S. and Iran issued strongly worded statements about what took place. Thanks to YouTube, footage of the confrontation from both sides is freely available in its entirety to anyone.

One of the greatest benefits of online video use in the media is the ability to offer an uncut look at an event without the concerns and constraints of a news program seeking ratings. No television news show could get…
